Hi Reader,
It's feeling a lot like summer! And summer is my favorite season. In spite of the heat, I adore being outside by water (pool, lake, beach…you name it, I love it), and I constantly feel the siren’s call to come play.
And yet...if I’m being honest, part of me is also feeling trepidatious about this summer. Starting Friday afternoon, my kids will be home, and underfoot. Which means I'll be living in the struggles of balancing writing and to-do list items with the constant entertainment and stimulation of young children. But even if you don’t have young kids to entertain, or loads of activities to shuttle them around to, summer can be a challenging time for productive writing.
Between vacations and the desire to get outside and play, sometimes it seems like the last thing you want to do is work on your book. The weather is finally warm, and nature is calling. If you’re anything like me, the sunshine, the energy, the radiance beckons.
But who says you can’t get outside and write? As a writer, this may be the season to learn to access new parts of your creativity and lean into a different type of growth and abundance…
One that doesn’t require you to hunker down between four walls and a roof. Or plugged into a wall. One that doesn’t require you to spend hours strapped to your manuscript, or lose momentum that you’ll have to recoup after the summer season.
Maybe, just maybe, this is the best time to set yourself up for long-term success so when you are spending time on your manuscript, you’re working smarter—not harder—and spinning your wheels a whole lot less.
For me, as I work toward drafting my new novel, this looks like…
Adjusting my daily writing (and coaching) schedule so I am able to be present with (and for!) my kids.
Bringing a notebook or a printed manuscript—or even my laptop—poolside, so I can do the work of drafting my book while enjoying the playful season.
Meeting regularly with other writers with whom I can share accountability.
Yes, I may be a book coach and former agent, but I’m also an aspiring author. And as a fellow writer, I understand the challenges and frustrations of writing—especially amidst the busy seasons of life.
I’m partially through a first draft, and honestly, I’m looking to build something to keep me (and you?) accountable, connected, and moving forward.
If you’re in need of some community and want to actually make real progress on your novel this summer—whether you’re drafting from scratch or knee-deep in revision—then I’d like to invite you to come write with me this summer.
